We are largely unaware of the flow of ‘thoughts’ that run through our heads including those that guide most of our living actions. Let’s face it when it comes to breathing, seeing, hearing, touching and even tasting, these functions take place without our conscious participation. Life would be pretty difficult if we had to stop and think, “Okay heart, beat. Lungs, breathe. Blood keep pumping.” I know it’s silly but few of us ever stop to think about how much is going on behind the scenes.
It’s also interesting to note that most of our intentional behavior takes place without our conscious thought. We drive a car without really thinking about it. We tie our shoes because years ago we learned to perform this simple task. Let me ask you a question. How many times have you been dialing a phone number, caught yourself trying to consciously recall what the number was, and then been unable to remember it? Yet when you just punch in the numbers in a whir without any
conscious thought the numbers tumble right out of your mind, into your fingers and onto the phone! Come on, admit it. I bet you’ve done it. I know I have. Pretty amazing isn’t it?.
Another example of how our unconscious helps us is when you are trying to remember something. It may be the name of a song, where you left your car keys, what that guy’s name was from your first year in college or whatever. You try and try to bring it to mind but nothing happens. Then, maybe several hours or even days later, while you are brushing your teeth, shopping for groceries of sitting in a boring meeting — boom, the answer comes to you out of nowhere, like a bolt of lightning. This is because our unconscious stores everything. Every tiny piece of data we have ever encountered is stored in our unconscious mind. It’s sort of like a huge back up hard drive that never gets overwritten.
This is the level of consciousness we tap when we begin to use our psychic gifts. We will explore these concepts in greater detail in future posts. Right now any comments, musings, questions or other feedback are more than welcome.
